The population of England & Wales stands at 56.1 million, compared to 52.4 million ten years ago. The UK population over 65 years old is 16.4% and the number of children under 5 years is 3.5 million. The median age is 39 years.

The Muslim population stands at 2.7 million - the statistic in 2001 was 1.55 million.

Factors accounting for the increase include

  • natural growth from a demographic profile of younger people compared to the rest of the population, with younger families
  • improved response to the voluntary Religion question compared to 2001 e.g. less undercounting amongst Somali communities
  • new settlement e.g. from Afghanistan and Iraq in the last decade
  • the inclusion of the 'Arab' ethnic category may have encouraged responses to the voluntary Religion question
  • persons adopting the faith possibly, but this is likely to be marginal

    Age-Sex demographics of the Muslim population and Cross tabulations of Religion vs Ethnicity is now available.

    Without its younger BME population the median age of Britain could well be not 39 but 49!

    The drop in the Christian population between 2001 and 2011 could be related to the slight but subtle change in wording of the Religion question. In 2001 the first option was 'No Religion' followed by 'Christian' and other major faiths; in 2011 the first option was 'None', the rest unchanged. It could be that many individuals would not go as far as to say 'No Religion' and thus ticked 'Christian'; in 2011 the opening choice was less stark.
