The Lineage of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him

The inhabitants of the jazirat al-Arab (the Arabian peninsula) trace their ancestry to two archetypal figures, Qahtan and Adnan. The Prophet is a descendent of Adnan. The Arabs of the Hejaz in particular are referred to as the Arab al-mustariba. The ancient Arab tribes, such as Thamud, are known as the Arab al-baida.
