Already there is a wealth of exegetical work on the Qur'an, Muhammad al-Ghazali's (d. 1996) work is unique in the sense that it focuses on organic unity of each Chapter (surah). No exegesis is by itself sufficient for a full understanding of the Qur'an. But this work is an indispensable companion in the quest for a better comprehension of the sacred text. Translated by Ashur A Shamis, revised by Zainab Alawiye

Bennabi's reformulation of the Qur'an's miracle within the wider philosophical and historical context of the religious phenomenon and prophetic movement is quite unique. It invites the mind to a different reading of human religious history and a different understanding of the human condition that goes far beyond the mere concerns of Muslims. The most important means by which scholars sought to restore the intimate contact between Muslims and the Qur'an was to study the objectives of Islam, the causes behind legal rulings and the intentions and goals of the Islamic Law. This book, translated from the original Arabic, represents a pioneering contribution presenting a comprehensive theory of the objectives of Islamic Law in its various aspects, as well as a painstaking study of objectives-based thought as pioneered by the father of objectives-based jurisprudence, Imam al-Shatibi. The author presents us with an important study of al-Shatibi himself, which offers a wealth of new, beneficial information about the life, thought and method of this venerable Imam.

This is a vivid account of a month-long retreat in the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. The luminous details of this sojourn (Ramadan 1418/December 1997-January 1998) in Islam's second-most sacred mosque are superimposed on the historical events that shaped the Muslim community during its initial formative period. Numerous episodes from the life of the Prophet form the backdrop for the slow unfolding of a narrative filled with intense reflections on contemporary Muslim life. Woven into the tapestry of this unique book are the desires, hopes, fears, and spiritual struggles of many pilgrims who were present during the month of Ramadan in the Mosque, fourteen hundred and eighteen years after it was built by Prophet Muhammad and his Companions.

Tadabbur-e-Qur'an by Amin Ahsan Islahi (translated by Mohammad Saleem Kayani) invites the reader to ponder and reflect on the message of the Qur'an. It is based on the principle of nazm or coherence and refutes the oft-repeated allegation that the Holy Book lacks order and continuity.

Amin Ahsan Islahi was born in 1904 in Azamgarh, India. There, he was a student, and later a long-serving teacher at the Madrasatu-Islah which specialised in Arabic and Qur'anic studies. A leading Islamic scholar who made Pakistan his home, he was able to draw on what he learned from his own teacher, Imam Hamiduddin Farahi, combining this with a deep understanding of the Arabic language and startlingly original and independent insights. First published in Urdu in 1967, this translation will inspire and reinspire students of the Qur'an who rely on the English language in accessing Islamic source material. Islahi died in Lahore in 1997.

The present volume covers the first two chapters of the Qur'an, Surah Al-Fatihah and Surah Al-Baqarah. It serves as an important resource for students of the Qur'an because its contents are structured into logical sections and subsections with respect to theme and content. Each portion can thus be studied on a week-by-week or other regular basis in a systematic manner. The whole approach is to welcome enquiring and questioning minds to engage with the message of the Qur'an.

Abu Ishaq al-Shatibi (d.1888) had sought an answer to the challenge posed by modernisation and change to Islamic law, by introducing maslahah, which forms the basis of his philosophy of Islamic law. In a fascinating way, the author leads us step by step to what he considers the true import of Shatibi's views concerning Jurisprudence.

The revival and power of religious feelings among Muslims since the Iranian revolution presents a complicated and often perplexing picture of the politics of modern Islam. What are the ideas which have influenced the direction of these trends? Here, Hamid Enayat provides an answer by describing and interpreting some of the major Islamic political ideas, especially those expressed by Iranians and Egyptians, as well as thinkers from Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. He examines the political differences between the two main schools in Islam - Shi'ism and Sunnism. Also covered in the book is: the concept of the Islamic state; and the Muslim response to the challenge of alien and modern ideologies such as nationalism, democracy and socialism - as well as notions of Shi'i modernism.

The Prophet Muhammad taught the word of God to the Arabs. Within a generation of his death, his followers - as vivid a cast of heroic individuals as history has known - had exploded out of Arabia to confront the two great superpowers of the seventh-century and establish Islam and a new civilization.

That the protagonists originated from the small oasis communities of central Arabia gives their adventures, their rivalries, their loves and their achievements an additional vivacity and intimacy. So that on one hand, The Heirs Of The Prophet Muhammad is a swaggering saga of ambition, immense achievement, self-sacrificing nobility and blood rivalry, while on the other it allows us to understand some of the complexities of our modern world. For within this fifty-year span of conquest and empire- building, Barnaby Rogerson also identifies the seeds of discord that destroyed the unity of Islam, and traces the roots of the schism between Sunni and Shia Muslims to the rivalry of the two individuals who best knew and loved the Prophet: his cousin and son-in-law Ali and his wife Aisha.

The Heirs of the Prophet Muhammad recounts the lives of the handful of individuals - the first four Caliphs, the Prophet's widows and the conquering generals - who led and influenced Islam after the death of Muhammad. Their dazzling achievements are thrillingly chronicled, but so too are the conflicting ambitions that led to civil war. So that although an empire was forged, in the process Muhammad's own family would be disinherited, his grandson murdered, the revered temple of God at Mecca, the Kaaba, burned to the ground, and the first copy of the Koran stained with the blood of a Caliph.

Concluding the masterly account of the history of Islam begun with The Prophet Muhammad, Barnaby Rogerson has done justice to one of our few truly epic stories.

A young boy attends a madrassa in Mogadishu, Somalia. His parents take him on pilgrimage to Mecca. He comes to Britain as a child and by the time he is a young man, the war in Somalia prevents him from going home. Years later he will watch the US operation in Mogadishu in horror whilst some of his closest relatives are in the city. He will witness the invasion of Iraq in disbelief. For many people in Britain this is the biography of a man to be feared, the typical life of a young, male, black, British Muslim. It is also Rageh Omaar's story. Only Half of Me is the profoundly moving account on being a Muslim in Britain: the author's own childhood and his attempt to straddle the world of his parents and that of his own, Western generation. It is also the story of people from similar backgrounds who made very different decisions: the Somali man who attempted to kill civilians because of a war happening in a Muslim country he has never visited; the Muslims who are renouncing their religion; the author's cousin who was stabbed in a London street on 8 July 2005. Full of humanity and rage, empathy and insight, "Only Half of Me" is an utterly compelling book that takes the reader on a journey into the heart of modern Britain and brings to life a world that has remained, until now, hidden from view.
