Tadabbur-e-Qur'an by Amin Ahsan Islahi (translated by Mohammad Saleem Kayani) invites the reader to ponder and reflect on the message of the Qur'an. It is based on the principle of nazm or coherence and refutes the oft-repeated allegation that the Holy Book lacks order and continuity.

Amin Ahsan Islahi was born in 1904 in Azamgarh, India. There, he was a student, and later a long-serving teacher at the Madrasatu-Islah which specialised in Arabic and Qur'anic studies. A leading Islamic scholar who made Pakistan his home, he was able to draw on what he learned from his own teacher, Imam Hamiduddin Farahi, combining this with a deep understanding of the Arabic language and startlingly original and independent insights. First published in Urdu in 1967, this translation will inspire and reinspire students of the Qur'an who rely on the English language in accessing Islamic source material. Islahi died in Lahore in 1997.

The present volume covers the first two chapters of the Qur'an, Surah Al-Fatihah and Surah Al-Baqarah. It serves as an important resource for students of the Qur'an because its contents are structured into logical sections and subsections with respect to theme and content. Each portion can thus be studied on a week-by-week or other regular basis in a systematic manner. The whole approach is to welcome enquiring and questioning minds to engage with the message of the Qur'an.

The revival and power of religious feelings among Muslims since the Iranian revolution presents a complicated and often perplexing picture of the politics of modern Islam. What are the ideas which have influenced the direction of these trends? For within this fifty-year span of conquest and empire- building, Barnaby Rogerson also identifies the seeds of discord that destroyed the unity of Islam, and traces the roots of the schism between Sunni and Shia Muslims to the rivalry of the two individuals who best knew and loved the Prophet: his cousin and son-in-law Ali and his wife Aisha.

The Heirs of the Prophet Muhammad recounts the lives of the handful of individuals - the first four Caliphs, the Prophet's widows and the conquering generals - who led and influenced Islam after the death of Muhammad. Their dazzling achievements are thrillingly chronicled, but so too are the conflicting ambitions that led to civil war. So that although an empire was forged, in the process Muhammad's own family would be disinherited, his grandson murdered, the revered temple of God at Mecca, the Kaaba, burned to the ground, and the first copy of the Koran stained with the blood of a Caliph.
