Why Israel Does Not Engage With The Saudi Initiative Monday 11 Jun 2007 The reason for Israel’s reluctance to actively engage with the Saudi initiative or any peace plan is that Israeli public discourse and national consciousness have never come to terms with the idea, accepted by the over whelming majority of historians today, that Israel actively engaged in ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their homes in 1947/8 and hence has responsibility for the Palestinian Nakba. By allowing for the rightful and unconditional return of millions of Palestinians, as stated by UN resolutions, the resultant disestablishment of the zionist state would usher in a truly democratic unitary state.

Editorial: Bush doesn't want detente. He wants to attack Iran
Despite the disaster in Iraq, there is no indication that Washington has given up the idea of attacking Iran. The idea of an assault against Iran is after all part of the Bushite vision of a "third world war", an ideological war that can end only in complete victory. The demonisation of Iran by the hawks and Likudniks is part of this strategy and may well culminate in yet another military venture. That would be a disaster, not only for Iran and the Arab world, but for western, and especially European, relations with the Middle East. Europe's newest leaders, one wanting to cazy upto Bush, the other deperate to distance himself from Bush - Nicolas Sarkozy and Brown - would do well to remember that.
