Professor Tehmina N Basit
Professor Tehmina N Basit

Tehmina Basit is Professor of Education and Director of the Institute for Education Policy Research at Staffordshire University. She was born and brought up in Lahore, Pakistan. Her PhD in Education at the University of Cambridge, completed in 1995, examined the educational, social and career aspirations of teenage Muslim girls in Britain.

Tehmina has held research or academic posts at the Universities of Keele, Manchester Metropolitan, Leicester, and Wolverhampton. Her research is mainly on issues of social justice, social inclusion, and the education of minority ethnic groups, in which she favours a qualitative methodology. She has directed externally-funded projects in these areas and has published widely in refereed academic journals.

She regularly presents papers based on her research at international Education conferences, including conferences in the UK, US, Europe and Australia. Her recent books include: Basit, T.N. (2010) Conducting Research in Educational Contexts, London: Continuum Books; and Basit, T.N. and Tomlinson, S. (Eds.) (2014) Social Inclusion and Higher Education. Bristol: Policy Press.
