This ought to be a case study for Muslim activists: how Muslims in Enfield, North London, took on a Tory councillor who was disparaging towards Muslims. Chris Joannides, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph,  had  posted a photograph showing a woman and child dressed in the traditional Muslim clothing standing next to two binbags. A caption read: “I saw her standing there and I told her she had three beautiful children. She didn’t have to get all ****** off and threaten me. It was an honest mistake!”

The local Muslim community took the matter up with the Conservative Party, which then  dropped him as a candidate for the recently held  local elections and also expelled him from the party for 12 months.

It should be noted that Enfield North  is a marginal constituency in the 2015 General Election: the incumbent Conservative MP has a majority of about 1,700 in a seat with a Muslim population of 14,000 (13.5%) of the population. In the adjoining Enfield Southgate,  a safer Tory seat, the Muslim population is 11,000 (11%).  The Tories were wise to mend their fences with a sizeable vote bank.
