After a military coup in Syria in 1949, he led the agitation on behalf of the peasants. In 1952, he fled to Lebanon with Aflaq, the leader of the Ba’ath party.
Hawrani was instrumental in the formation of United Arab Republic, a union of Syria and Egypt in 1958. He became Vice President of UAR, but resigned in 1959 because of internal differences. In 1961 Syria seceded from the UAR and he was appointed a deputy in the new Syrian parliament.
