Biographical detail : An Afghan military and political leader.

Daud Khan who overthrew the monarchy of Zahir Shah became the President of Afghanistan and began to implement a reform programme. Education, in particular, received an important boost girls began to be educated in the villages and some co-educational institutions were also established. A new generation of young Afghan men and women emerged as doctors, teachers, scientists and technicians.

In 1978, Soviet Union dispatched a massive military column to Kabul thus the entry of Soviet troops into Afghanistan transformed an unpleasant civil war funded by Washington into a jihad enabling the mujahidin to appear as the only defenders of Afghan sovereignty against the foreign army of occupation.

Daud Khan was born in Kabul and educated in France, a brother-in-law and cousin of the King. He was murdered during a coup.
