Bashir was a lifelong communist who was both a linchpin of the Palestinian intifada of the late 1980s, and an advocate of an accommodation with the state of Israel. He helped reconcile the schism between Arafat’s Fatah and George Habash’s PFLP in 1987. He suffered Israeli imprisonment.
Bashir edited Jerusalem-based Al-Fagir and Al-Taliyat. A leading light in the influential Arab Thought Forum and Council for World Peace and one who earned everyone’s respect.
