The former defence minister, Amin Huwaidi, oversaw the 1967 war with Israel that followed the loss of the Sinai Peninsula. He led Egypt’s Defence and Intelligence Ministries.

A staunch supporter of the pan-Arab socialism Amin fell afoul of Anwar el-Saadat, successor to Jamal Abd al-Nasser, in 1970, and spent a decade under house arrest. Amin along with 91 people were arrested and accused of treason in a purge against senior officials considered disloyal.

After his years under house arrest, Amin became an author and analyst and did not return to the government.

On his demise, Amin Huwaidi was given the honour of military funeral in the Armed Forces Mosque in Cairo.
