Biographical detail : The Arab general who conquered Egypt in 638-40 and distinguished himself in the reign of Damascus and Jerusalem.

The charge by the western writer that he burnt the library at Alexandria after conquering the city has never been proved.

He proved himself as a great administrator and was responsible for the construction of a canal joining the Red sea and the Mediterranean.
