Denmark’s most prominent leader who was a central figure in the uproar in 2005 over cartoons first published in a Danish newspaper and which were considered to be disrespectful to Islam.
One of the cartoons published by the Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, depicted Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, wearing a turban shaped like a bomb that offended Muslims all over the world.
A Palestinian immigrant, Laban who was Imam at the Dortheavej Mosque in Copenhagen, Denmark, a country with about 210,000 Muslims out of its 5.4 million population, and who emerged into international spotlight, was hailed as a great spiritual leader by Muslim leaders.
Ahmad Abu Laban died of lung cancer.
