Name :Abd El Qadir

Biographical detail : Abdul Qadir Ibn Muhyiuddin al-Jazairi (his real name) was the Algerian national leader who led the resistance movement against the French in Algeria, occupied by France in 1830.

He took over from his father who started the resistance movement in 1832. In 1833 he fought against the French commander General Louis A Desmichales, who was forced to accept him as ruler of the Arabs. He won several battles but was captured by the French in 1847 and was imprisoned in France. He was released by Napoleon III and was awarded in 1860 the Grand Cross-of the Legion of Honour for saving a few thousand Christians from massacre.

Algerians consider him to be the greatest hero of their people. He spent his last days in Damascus.
