Biographical Data :

Name :Amr Khaled
Period :1968 -
Biographical detail : His television preaching reaches an audience of millions.

Khaled, wearing a smartly trimmed moustache and suits, preaches on satellite television Islamic piety that look modern and fashionable. What matters for him is personal piety, not politics. He uses simple, accessible language, not stiff religious discourse.

Known for his moderate interpretation of Islam, Khaled encourages dialogue, both within the Muslim community and between Muslims and the West. He is also a proponent of social development in the Muslim world, preaching that social and material progress does not contradict Islam and that Muslim communities can develop in accordance with Islam instead of imitating a western model.

The roots of radicalisation of young Muslims, according to Khaled, can be found in a complex mixture of economic and political dispossession, the perceived injustice resulting from western policies and the absence of clear peaceful guidance by mainstream clerics.

Broadcast over satellite television and the Internet, Khaled’s most popular shows have included “Call for Coexistence” and “Life Makers,” as well as his annual ministries during the holy month of Ramadan. His tapes are sold in millions and his website reported to had 26 million hits in 2004.

In 2002, Khaled relocated from Cairo to London after being banned from preaching by the Mubarak government. Though the Egyptian government continues efforts to limit Khaled’s influence, his popularity is still on the rise throughout the Muslim world.

Currently, Khaled serves as the chairman of the Right Start Foundation, a multicultural and interfaith organisation located in Britain.

Amr Khaled was born in Cairo’s upper class family of politicians and bankers. After years of studying accounting, he began preaching in 1990 and has now become one of world’s most popular preachers.
