Biographical detail : A leading Iraqi trade unionist apposed to the US-led war against his country.

Hadi Saleh, trade unionist and communist, was international secretary of Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU). He started his career as a printer when his professional life was interrupted at the age of 20 – he was sentenced to death, later on commuted, for his independent labour activities.

Hadi found refuge in Sweden where he helped establish the underground Workers’ Democratic Trade Union Movement, in 1980.

Hadi Saleh opposed president Bush’s war against Iraq. He returned home at considerable personal danger before the fall of the Saddam Hussein’s rule.

Hadi Saleh also known as Abu Furat, a small-framed, dapper man with an intense gaze and an air of surprising calm, was murdered after being tortured by a gang who broke into his Baghdad home.
