Biographical detail : Scientist.

Al-Majriti established a school in Cordova where he introduced the study of science, especially mathematics and alchemy – school where figures such as the historian Ibn Khuldun and physician al-Zahravi were to study later.

Al-Majriti was responsible for spreading the Epistles of the brethren of Purity, an encyclopaedia of knowledge with a Pythagorean tinge, which had just become popular in the East, in Andalusia.

‘The Sage’s Step’ and ‘The Aim of the Wise’, two of the best-known works in Islamic alchemy, are either by al-Majriti or directly inspired by his teachings. The later was translated into Latin as Picatrix and became a mainstay of alchemical literature in the west.

Al-Majriti whose full was Abu’l Qasim Maslamah al-Majriti was born in Madrid (Spain).
