Gelayev became deputy prime minister, in 1997, and the following year defence minister – essentially he continued as a filed commander. He shuttled between Chechnya, Dagestan, and the Chechen populated Pankisi Gorge in north-eastern Georgia, where he settled in summer of 2000.
Ruslan Gelayev, reportedly shot dead by two border guards as he tried to flee from Chechnya’s neighbouring republic Dagestan southwards across the mountains into Georgia.
Ruslan Gelayev was born in the village of Komsomolskoe close to the town of Urus-Martin where the Chechen plains meet the Caucasus mountains, a decade or so after his family returned from Chechens’ mass deportation beyond the Urals by Stalin.
