Ahmad Zahir, a Pashtun, and the son of the former prime minister sang mostly in Afghanistan that symbolises for many the golden age of 1970s. Zahir emerged as a musical prodigy at Kabul’s Habibur High School, hence another moniker, the Nightingale of Habibur. Singing classical Persian poetry and his own love songs, Zahir also performed in Iran, Pakistan, India and Tajikistan. His music fused eastern and western styles, mixing traditional percussion and saxophones and electric guitars.
