One of Afghan Mujahidin, a character of immense charisma who earned himself the sobriquet ‘Lion of Panjshir’ for his ten-year long resistance to the Soviet invaders of his country. In April 1992, three years after the Russians withdrew from Afghanistan; Masood led a column of tanks to Kabul. The victory stunned everyone.
Later on the Taliban deposed him from power. A booby-trapped camera aimed by assassins posing as journalists killed him.
He studied engineering but always wanted to be a soldier – loved poetry and reading books.
