Born in Sumatra, he played a leading role moderating the communist influence in the nationalist movement. In 1915 he joined the Sarekat Islam party and played an important role in the political conflicts of the early 1920s. He served briefly as vice minister of foreign affairs during 1946-47, after Indonesia's independence. |
