Shafiq was a man of reconciliation and sagacity who patiently sought peace between Lebanon’s factions and Israeli invaders. He was appointed premier in 1980 at the height of the cruel civil war in Lebanon. He also became chairman of the supreme Islamic Council in 1973.
Soft-spoken and smiling, Shafiq al-Wazzan was born and died in Beirut of a heart attack. |
