Salamat was an outstanding exponent of khayal, the imaginative and colourful style of music evolved under the influence of Sufi saints. He hailed from the professional musician family of Sham Chaurasi gharana in Hoshlarpur, Punjab, India, but moved to Lahore after the partition of India.
In 1960, Salamat won the President of Pakistanís Award. He who won international recognition died of kidney failure.
