Before ascending the throne in 744, Marwan II was the governor of Armenia. He completed the conquest of Syria by 746. In 750, he was killed at the battle of the great Zab River by the combined forces of Abbasids, Iranians and Iraqis, a battle, which broke Ummaya'd power forever. Six months after the defeat, he was killed in Egypt where he had fled. He was also known as al Himar (the ass) for his strength and perseverance.
