Mammeri was one of the foremost literary figures of this century. He was the best known advocate of the Berber language and culture. He became the mentor of a generation of outstanding Kabyle singers.
Memmeriís first novel was published in 1955, titled La Sommid du Juste. In La Opium et la Baton (1965) wherein he described about the Algerian war of independence. His later works included La Banquet and La Traversee in 1982.
