Kamal El-din Hussein

Soldier and politician. Kamal was one of the five-strong nucleus of the Free Officers' Movement in Egypt (1949-50). It was 'at a 1952 meeting in Kamal's house that the Free Officers re-elected Nasser as leader'. Kamal played the crucial role on the day of the coup in July 1952, which led to King Farouk's abdication. Kamal was deeply religious, anti-Communist, idealist and a great revolutionary. Kamal was born in Cairo and he died of cancer. He was buried with full military honours.
