Ismat Inonu

Birth:1884

Death:1973

Politician. Ismat Inonu was Turkey's Prime Minister from 1923 to 1937 and from 1961 to 1965 and President from 1938 to 1950. Ismat joined the Turkish Army in 1904. He fought at Gallipoli and commanded forces in Syria in 1916. He joined Attatuurk's forces in 1920 and became commander in chief of the army fighting the Greeks in Anatolia during 1921-22. Ismat was called Inonu, because of the two battles he fought at Inonu in January and April 1921 and emerged victorious. Inonu was minister of foreign affairs in 1922 and when Turkey became a republic in 1923, and was Prime Minister till 1937. On Attaturek's death in 1938, he was elected President and continued till 1950, when he was defeated in elections. He was again Prime minister in 1961 till 1965. Ismat was born at Symarna.
