Fashion designer. Known for his avant-garde collections Hussein Chalayan has worked as creative director at Asprey and TSE New York, and has designed capsule collections for Topshop, Marks and Spencer and J Brand Jeans. International markets were quick to appreciate Chalayan. In February 2008, he was appointed for Puma, the German sportswear group. He also designed flight attendants' uniforms, aeroplane interiors and logo. Chalayan work has been exhibited in galleries in Tokyo, Vienna, New York and Germany. Chalayan won the prestigious British Designer of the Year award in 1999. Chalayan's company went into liquidation in December 2000. In September 2001, he became a Creative director at Asprey overseeing future collections. Hussein Chalayan was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. He was living in Istanbul and moved to England with his family in 1978. He studied fashion at Central Saint Martins. In 1993, Chalayan's graduate show entitled 'The Tangent Flows' saw him bury silk dresses in the ground to see how they would decay under the earth. It was bought by Browns, the influential London boutique.
