An emperor of Hindustan. The 'Hero of Panipath', 'The Mujahid' of the battle of Khanwa against Rana Sanga, the Emperor of Hindustan Humayoon was defeated by Sher Shah in a battle fought at the banks of the Chausa in Bihar in 1539 and was forced to seek asylum in Iran in 1544. He returned to India in 1555 and after defeating the last king of the Suri dynasty, became the emperor of Hindustan for the second time. Bairman Khan who had assisted him in his victory was awarded the title of Khan Khana Humayoon, however, died only seven months after the victory, falling down from the stairs of his library at Delhi, which is known as Sher Mandal, a double-story structure situated near the masjid in Purana Qila. He was coming down hurriedly to offer his namaz for Maghrib. The eldest son of the Emperor Babar Shah, Humayoon Nasiruddin Muhammad was born in Kabul. He succeeded his father to the throne at Agra in 1530.
