Abdullah Ibn Hussain
The first King of Jordan.
During the First World War he participated in the Arab revolt against the Turk (1916) and helped the British drive them out of Syria. He was installed by the British as the head of the newly created Emirate of Jordan (1921) and gained its independence from Britain in 1946.
He earned the enmity of many Arabs by annexing Palestine during the Arab War with Israel (1949) and was assassinated in 1951 by a Palestinian nationalist.
