Hatta studied in the Netherlands from 1922 to 1932. Returning to Indonesia, he was arrested for his political activities in 1934 by the Dutch authorities. He was exiled in 1935 to the island of Bandanaaira, where he remained till the Japanese invasion of Indonesia in World War II. He collaborated with the Japanese but in 1945, he along with Sukarno, was kidnapped by students who wanted them to declare for Indonesian independence.
In 1948 Hatta was appointed Prime Minister. In 1956 he resigned as vice President because of disagreement with Sukarno.
