Manufacturer of Unani medicine. After he took over Hamdard Dawakhana, which was founded at Delhi in 1922 by his father who died three months earlier, Hameed nourished it into the premier manufacturer of Unani medicine with modern methods. He standardised Unani Pharmacoepia and its publication and mass-produced Unani medicine under strict quality control. Some of his products have become household names in South Asia and beyond. Hameed life long commitment to education led him to set up Hamdard College of Pharmacy, the Institute of History of Medicine, and Indian Institute of Islamic Studies which evolved into Hamdard University in 1989 and he also founded Ghalib Academy. Hameed was punctual to a fault, meticulous in planning his time, his life was regulated, simple, courteous to all and above all a life of harmony personified. Hameed received Avicenna Award by Soviet Union (1983), India's Padma Bhushan Award (1991), Iran's Academy of Medical Sciences conferred its Honorary Fellowship and Hamdard University, Karachi, gave him D.Litt. Honoris Causa in 1993. Hakeem Abdul Hameed gave a sense of pride and achievement to the Indian Muslims.
