Abdul Malik the fifth Caplih of the Ommayads made him Governor of Arabia and Arabian Iraq, after he had defeated and killed Abdullah bin Zubair, who had declared himself caliph of Hajaz. In 693 Hajjaj destroyed Ka'bah, which Abdullah bin Zubair had repaired. It was said that he was a great tyrant and according to Malik bin Dinar he had put to death about 100,000 shias in Iraq in order to quell their rebellion. Hajjaj died during the reign of caliph Walid I in 714 aged about 54 years. But his greatest achievement was to put the irabs or dia critical points on the words of the Qur'an, which made it easier for non-Arabs to read it and he also made Arabic the official language of the Muslim empire. Sind was conquered by Muhammad bin Qasim on his command. The `Alids and Kharijites who had continually made trouble for the Ummayads were crushed by Hajjaj.
