A famous Persian poet. Hafiz was a contemporary of Amir Taimur. Many zealot admirers of Hafiz insisted that by 'wine' he meant devotion, 'sleep' as meditation, `beauty' the perfection of the supreme being, and `mirth' and `inebriety' meant religious ardour. But this may be stretching it too far. Sir W. Jones, Messrs Richardson and Caryle and others translated his work into some of the European Languages including English.
