Among 1975 and 1978 Gayoon held many ministerial and diplomatic posts before succeeding Ibrahim Nasir as President. He was re-elected President in 1983 and 1980.
Gayoom who was educated at Al Azhar University, Cairo, lectured in Islamic studies at the American University during 1967-69.
