Al Farazdaq

Birth:691

Death:730

The Arab poet famous for his satires. When he wrote a satire on a person who later became governor of Iraq in 669, he was forced to flee to Madinah. When al Hajjaj became governor in 694, he was again out of favour, but he became the court poet of al Walid (705-715) in whose honour he wrote many panegyrics. He was also in good favour of caliph Sulaiman (715-717) but was again out of favour during the reign of Umar II when he became caliph in 717. Farzadaq was a great eccentric and was known for his obscene satires, which some times brought disgrace to him. His vocabulary was so vast that an old Arabic critic declared, 'If Farzadaq's poetry did not exist, one-third of the Arabic language would be lost.'
