Also known as Hilmi Pasha. The last Khedieve (Viceroy of the Sultan) of Egypt. He succeeded his father Tawfik Pasha in 1892. Pro-Turkish Abbas was suspicious of British policy in Egypt. He resented their control as virtual rulers of Egypt since 1882. After Britain declared war on Turkey in 1914, British made Egypt a British protectorate and terminated Turkish suzerainty. The following day Abbas was deposed and the title of Khedieve was abolished. When Egypt became independent in 1922, he was forbidden to come back to Egypt from Switzerland, where he was living in exile and died. He was the author of 'A Few Words on the Anglo-Egyptian Settlement.
