The Pasha of Egypt and grandson of Muhammad Ali. He succeeded his uncle Ibrahim Pasha in 1849. He distrusted Europeans and dismissed most of his grandfather's European advisers and forbade European concessions. In 1853 he demonstrated his loyalty to Turkey by sending 15,000 men to help the Turks in the Crimean War. He was strangled to death by two of his slaves.
