Abdul Karim Muhammad Rif

Death:1963

A Moroccan nationalist leader. He led an anti-colonial rebellion in 1919. His confederated republic of RIF Tribes, held out against French Spanish forces in 1921-1927. He was exiled in 1927 and spent the rest of his life in Egypt and other countries. Regarded as a hero by many third world countries, his life inspired the operetta The Desert Song and the novel and film Bean Geste.
