Mufti Sadruddin Khan Azurda
The Grand Mufti and an Urdu poet.
The Grand Mufti of Dehli (Delhi), 'Azurda' whose highly exalted position had the final say in the shariat matters played an important role as bridge between the English and Mughal elites in the early days of the British ascendancy in Delhi.
A natural mediator, Mufti Sadruddin was responsible for reconciling the jihadis, the court and the sepoys during the crisis over cow killing which took place during the Idd of 1 August 1857, so avoiding a potential civil war within rebel ranks.
Mufti Sadruddin Khan 'Azurda', himself a poet, was known to be an acquaintance and admirer of Ghalib.
