Moroccan photographer admired for her striking portraits
Best known for a series of portraits of Moroccan people taken by Leila Alaoui and shown at the Biennial of Contemporary Arab World Photography in Paris.
She embarked on a photographic project on migrants, a subject that remained of constant interest to her, as did the humanitarian consequences of migration.
She was in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to work on a photography project for a women's rights campaign called 'My Body My Rights' for Amnesty International where she was shot in terrorist attacks. She died of heart attack.
Born in Paris Leila Alaoui grew up in Marrakech. She studied photography and anthropology at the City University of New York.
