Pakistani politician An active supporter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, former prime minister and his Pakistan People's Party Salman Taseer remained a fierce PPP and Bhutto family loyalist. When Bhutto was toppled in a 1977 military coup led by General Zia-ul-Haq, the young Taseer was arrested. After his release he went into exile in the UK where he wrote a political biography of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, which was published in 1980. After Zia-ul-Haq's death in 1988 and following elections, Taseer won a seat in the Punjab provincial legislature. In 2007 he was appointed an interim cabinet minister for industry, and a year later was made governor of Punjab. Founding various chartered accountancy and management consultancy firms, an equity brokerage and a leading mobile phone operator Salman also owned a television channel and an English-language newspaper in Pakistan. Taseer was worried that US done attacks in and around Pakistan were radicalising young Punjabis. His fears were found to be true, he was shot dead after he stepped out of his bullet-proof car near a market in central Islamabad. Son of an urban intellectual Salman Taseer studied at the prestigious school in Lahore and travelled to Britain where he qualified as a chartered accountant.
