Kutlug Ataman

Turkish filmmaker and best-known artist. The artist who made his name with feature films - Serpent's Tale (1994), Lola and Bilidikid (1998) Kutlug Ataman later progressed into contemporary art and attained reputation as a showman. Clashed with his country's ruling military junta in 1980, Ataman fled to California and enrolled in film school. Since then he has lived in Paris, South America, Germany and London. In 1997, having won respect across Europe for his darkly poetic feature films, Ataman parachuted himself to the summit of the art world. His first exhibit was at the Venice Biennale in 1999. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2004. In his country Ataman's first major show The Enemy Inside Me took place in November 2010 at Istanbul Modern, Turkey's museum of modern art. In his latest film Beggars (2010) premiered at Istanbul Modern Ataman shows beggars on the streets of Istanbul directing their pleas to the camera. Son of a diplomat Kutlug Ataman was born at Istanbul. He is now living in Istanbul and recently became a Turkish citizen again.
