Bosnian politician and manager The former prime minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Ahmet Hadzipasic was an unlikely figure whose background was in industrial management. He worked mostly in the metal and engineering companies of the iron and steel centre of Zenica, in top position, with great success and growing status. He also taught at the city's technical university. As a politician he brought together mainly the Bosnjak (Muslim) and Croat communities into co-existing. The governing Party of Democratic Action (SDA) traditionally associated with the Bosnjak nationalists chose Ahmet to show that the party was opting for a technocrat who would put action on the economy ahead of ideological considerations. He appeared well-suited to the task of streamlining government finance, privatising state-run enterprises and attracting foreign investment in the country. Ahmet Hadzipasic became prime minister in 2003 until unceremoniously sacked in early 2007. He was handicapped by Bosnia's hopelessly complex political structure. He proved much more co-operative in his approach to the state-building project than a figure from SDA's nationalist wing might have been.
