Currently President of Cordoba University in USA, Dr. al-Alwani is also the Imam al-Shafi'i Chair in Islamic Legal Theory at the Graduate School of Islamic and Social sciences in USA.
He is a founder-member of the Council of the Muslim World League in Makkah and a member of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC); Islamic Fiqh Academy, in Jeddah, since 1987
.
Widely published in the field of Islamic Jurisprudence, Dr. al-Alwani's most famous works include his six-volume edition of al-Razi's Al Mahsul fi 'Ilm Usul al Fiqh' (The Sum and Substance of Usul al Fiqh).
An Iraqi native, Taha Jabir al-Alwani received Ph.D. in Islamic Legal Theory and Jurisprudence from Al Azhar University (1973) before teaching for ten years (1975-85) at Imam Muhammad Ibn Sa'ud University in Riyadh.
In 1984, on coming to America, Dr. al-Alwani served as the Chairman of the Fiqh Council of North America. He was a founding member of the International Institute of Islamic thought (IIIT), in 1981, at Virginia, USA of which he is the President since 1988 and a member of its Board of Trustees.
