Pakistani journalist and civil servant.
A man of extra-ordinary versatility, charm and intelligence who led a multi-faceted life. He served government of Pakistan under Ayub Khan. In 1969 he became editor of Dawn where he had differences with Bhutto, who was chief martial law administrator, and who twice put Altaf in prison.
Altaf in prison became deeply absorbed in Islam and made several translations of Qur'an.
In 1978 based In London, he launched Third World Foundation and its Third World Quarterly, a monthly South and also co-edited the Third World Review. He wrote books on political matters.
Altaf Gauhar was born in Gujranwala and he died of cancer.
