Alparslan Turkes

Birth:1917

Death:1997

The politician born in Nicosia, Cyprus, whose parents migrated to Istanbul where he won a place at Kuleli, the military academy whose previous graduates had included Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Alparslan put into practice a brand of ultra-nationalism founded in the 'Turanist' myth: Turks were a continuation of a brave race that came to Anatolia from the steppes of Central Asia. He believed the answer to Turkey's problems lay in strong and radical dictatorship and certainly not in liberal democracy. Alparslan was arrested after 1980 coup when he and 200 members of his party were charged with instigating civil war and murdering nearly 600 people. He was released on medical grounds in 1985 and a guilty verdict was overturned on appeal. Alparslan Turkes endorsed, just before his death, the military's all-too-public view that the pro-Islamic Welfare party was threatening the country's democratic regime.
