The governor who oversaw development of the holy cities and humanitarian schemes for pilgrims. Chief of the central hajj committee, Prince Abdul Majeed, known for his philanthropy, was a highly influential figure in the political landscape of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Prince Abdul Majeed oversaw some of the biggest construction projects in the kingdom including transformation of Masjid-e-Nabawi in Madinah and Masjid-e-Haram in Makkah, the two focal points of the annual hajj. Among a myriad of projects, the largest include the King Abdul Aziz Endowment Project and the Jebel Omar scheme, comprising more than 40 high-rise towers, hotels, convention and conference centres and prayer facilities for 200,000 people. The prince supervised the extension of port facilities at Jeddah and an ongoing expansion of the international airport and building of new roads. He implemented measures to ensure the spiritual welfare of pilgrims, deploying university professors to provide guidance to those on pilgrimage - employing more than 150 translators and giving copies of the Qur'an in Braille to blind. As patron of Jeddah Economic Forum, the prince established the Khadeeja bint Khuwailed Centre for Businesswomen in Jeddah, in 2003, where their interests might be specifically addressed. Under the prince's direction the province bordering Red Sea and Jordan became one of the kingdom's chief producers of wheat, fruit and other crops. Renowned for his philanthropy, the prince was an honorary president of a number of public and private institutions including the Charitable Society for young people to marry, Jeddah Holding Company, the Committee for Helping Prisoners and the Needy and others. The 33rd son of the kingdom's founder, the late king Abdul-Aziz who had 36 sons, Abdul-Majeed was first appointed as governor of Madinah in 1985 and later in 2000 he became the governor of Makkah. Prince Abdul-Majeed bin Abdul-Aziz passed away after a long illness. He was rushed to America for treatment and died of leukaemia.
