India's promoter of inter-religious harmony An Indian reformist-writer and activist Asghar Ali Engineer was passionate promoter of inter-religious harmony. He was internationally known for his work on liberation theology in Islam, and he promoted the Progressive Dawoodi Bohra movement. Qualified as civil engineer, and fluent in English, Urdu, Gujarati, Marathi, Arabic and Persian, Dr Engineer was involved with inter-religious harmony in India for forty years. Having published more than 50 books on Islam and inter-religious problems in India, South and South East Asia, lectured in some universities throughout the world, he regularly contributed articles to several newspapers and research journals. He founded the Institute of Islamic Studies in 1980 and the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism in 1993. Dr Engineer was granted the Right Livelihood Award by a Swedish Foundation also known as alternate Noble Award. Dawoodi Bohra reformist Asghar Ali Engineer was born in a family of Islamic scholars in Rajasthan, India, and gained good knowledge of Islamic studies. He passed away after a prolong illness.
