Al Rifai Ahmad Bin Ali Abul Abbas
The founder of the Rifai order.
Born near Basra, he was called Rifai after an ancestor Rifa'a, had migrated from Makkah to Seville (Spain) in the 9th century, but Ahmad's grandfather came back to Basra and hence he was also called al-Magribi. He studied under a Shafi doctor Abul Fazl Ali al Wasiti. Some sources called him a disciple of Abdul Qadir Jilani. He was known to have a Diwan of odes to his credit and also a collection of prayers and sermons.
Ibn Batuta wrote of numerous Rifai establishment in Anatiolia, Caucasus and Damascus as well as in Batiah (Iraq) where he had lodged during his travels in 1332.
